My customers have always been my greatest inspiration. This July, I’ll be celebrating ten years in business. Over this decade, I’ve seen many changes in my personal life, my business, and my family. One of the most challenging times was during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a period that brought deep depression and significantly impacted our mental health. However, it also gave us a chance to reassess the value of socializing and the importance of the human touch.
As things are gradually returning to normal, the economic challenges and environmental stresses remind us of the crucial need for self-care. Every year, I receive different requests for services, and in 2023, I noticed a significant trend: many of my clients travelled abroad for more affordable cosmetic surgeries. I have helped numerous women with lymphatic drainage after liposuction and supported those who had gastric band surgery to lose weight.
One story that truly inspired me was a client who returned in April last year. I barely recognized her due to the remarkable transformation she had undergone. At that time, I weighed over 75 kg and wasn’t particularly focused on my appearance. I’m 60 years old, and my job involves a lot of sitting, which, coupled with knee injuries, made me less active. I used to walk my dogs, and two Labradors, but they were quite heavy for me. My favourite spot for walks is Inch Beach, which I call “dog paradise.” It’s especially wonderful in the winter and autumn, even when it rains, as there aren’t many people around.
Back to my weight loss story: my children recommended reading Dr. Daniel G. Amen’s book, “Be Happier and Unleash the Power of the Female Brain.” This book was a turning point for me. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to adopt a healthier lifestyle. When my inspirational client shared her experience, she mentioned undergoing gastric band surgery and adopting new habits. She said the key to her transformation was eating smaller portions and being satisfied with them.
Surgery wasn’t for me, but her story sparked a reminder of what I had learned in college about nutrition. I revisited Dr. Amen’s book, which provides valuable insights on healthy eating. His concept of food that loves you back resonated with me. Alongside this, I watched a YouTube interview with a couple in their 90s from Northern Europe. They had healthy teeth and attributed their longevity to eating slowly and chewing thoroughly. This simple yet profound advice helped me lose weight and change my clothing size from 16 to 8. Now, I maintain a healthy size 10-12.
Another book that has been instrumental in my journey is James Clear’s “Atomic Habits.” It sits on my table, and I listen to it on Audible while travelling or walking. This book has not only helped me but also many others in improving various aspects of life. If you haven’t read it yet, I highly recommend it for a fresh perspective on life.
I mentioned COVID-19 earlier because I still miss some of my clients and hope they are doing well. I wish the best for all of you. As a skin therapist, I am passionate about my job. I continuously educate myself to support my clients, not just in reducing wrinkles and sagging skin but also in offering better mental support.
Thank you for being part of my journey. Let’s continue to inspire each other to become the best versions of ourselves.
